Draft of Article
Every now and then a journalist professes to have interviewed a normal, down-to-earth popstar. They're so average they could be sitting next to you... on the Tube... right now. ________ hasn't quite yet reached the dizzy heights of fame. As she delights at the sound of an incoming text message on her iPhone and marvels at the amount of sweets she's just eaten, it's a comfort to learn that sudden propulsion to the big stage hasn't affected her. It's easy to mistake her as normal. But normal people don't have Number 1 singles.
22 year old _______ is set to storm the charts this weekend with her debut self titled album.
She’s already got fans excited with the single _______- which combines soul, pop and old-school influences. _____ told us about starting her career at the age of 13, her live gigs and visiting India….
Well I wish I was more energetic but saying that most of my songs aren't 'jump about screaming' songs, so I just give it a gentle sway with some jazz hands thrown in [Laughing]
What is your favourite instrument you use at your live shows?
Oh I love the maracas! I like the tambourine too but its not as fun [Laughing]

What are your songs about?
My latest album "_______" is about my hopes and dreams in life and how they are coming true, it can happen to anyone if they put the effort in.
When did you first realise you could sing?
When I was about 8 I had the leading role in my school musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat", yeah I know its a boys role but I was determined to prove that a girl can do just as well, anyway I got up to audition and sung my heart out, I was shocked, I could actually sing [Laughing].
Where did you go from there?
Well for a few years I just sang cos I enjoyed it, in the shower, doing homework and just for fun, one day I was singing in a competition in my town centre and got spotted, I got management when I was 13, started writing my own songs and kept my focus on it.
Did you ever have other ‘normal’ jobs?
I always knew I wanted to be a singer. My only options were singing as a career or being broke!
Who are your musical influences?
Erm... well for a long time I have been influenced by artists like Joss Stone and Kelly Rowland, recently I have been influenced by artists such as Florence and the Machine and an amazing band called Middle East - they're a folk band from Australia and they're not very well known.
How do you describe your music to people?
[hesitating] well, if people ask what my music sounds like ill tell them that they will have to listen to my album as it is very, erm... different [Laughing]
What was the music video to ______ like to shoot? Some artists hate filming them.
I love music videos and I got to go to India so I wasn’t complaining. I was there for three days and visited the Taj Mahal, it was a good cultural and spiritual change.
What is the best thing about doing live performances?
I think it’s the adrenaline rush from people coming to see me. It’s a great energy boost! I put on a good show and sing my heart out and have a good jam!
How do you rate your live performance ability?
Well I wish I was more energetic but saying that most of my songs aren't 'jump about screaming' songs, so I just give it a gentle sway with some jazz hands thrown in [Laughing]
What is your favourite instrument you use at your live shows?
Oh I love the maracas! I like the tambourine too but its not as fun [Laughing]
What are your ambitions and is there a star whose career path you’d like to follow?
I’d love to be able to sing around the world and be able to travel with my music. I do want to be myself but I look up to someone like Carole King. Everyone covers her songs and she’s respected. That’s something that I aim for and it’s something to work towards.

Analysis of CDs and Posters
Eliza Doolittle
This singer is quite an individual artist as she has no defined genre, this is shown through the variation of object on the cover. The CD cover will appeal to the target audience as it is fun and individual, the audience who this will appeal to would be fans of such genres as indie and pop as it is colourful but different. The images of places around london would appeal to a British audience as it is familiar to them.
Beyonce
This would appeal to the fans of Beyonce as they would be fans of pop & R&B, this would particularly appeal to that genre as pop and R&B as she is portrayed as glamorous with diamonds. This means it would appeal to men and women as women would want to be her and men would want her. On the cover she is dancing, suggesting that the music is good to dance to.
The same ideas are used for Rihanna and Beyonce as they are both shown as glamorous wearing make-up and showing a lot of skin, the Rihanna cover uses a glow to show beauty and softness which contradicts the music as the album is called LOUD and the music is very different. This would appeal to her audience as they do not know what to expect as the cover does not give any clues.
Media theory of target audience
Demographic Profiling
Demographic profiling groups the audience into smaller groups based on variables such as age, gender, religion, geographical area, class, economics, sexuality etc. This method groups people according to the lives they lead or their social or economic status. My target audience would most likely be in group E of the socio-economic scale (Unskilled, pensioners and unemployed- mainly students). This is because they have the time to search for new, individual artists and are determined to be the first to know.Psychographic Profiling
This suggests that things aim to appeal to the audiences emotions and psychological needs. Other studies such as Young and Rubicams Cross-cultural consumer characteristics, this characterises people in terms of their personal aspirations. Young and Rubicam said there were four categories of audience based upon these aspirations: Mainstreamers, Aspirers, Succeeders, Reformers. My target audience would be Aspirers - Motivated by status, they buy smart, high tech and high fashion goods. This supports the demographic profiling as they will want to be the first to know about everything.
Target audience & questionnaire
My questionnaire consisted of questions such as:-
1. Gender?
2. Age Range: 0-16, 16-25, 25-40, 40+
3. Preferred Genre: Pop, R&B, Rock, Indie, Drum & Bass, Classical
4. How often do you buy music magazines?
-more than once a week
-a couple a month
-one every few months
-hardly ever
I produced a questionnaire to determine who my target audience is and predict how well a magazine of my chosen genre will do in the music magazine market. The results showed that more females than males buy music magazines and more often. The most popular genres are indie, rock and R&B which is good considering my magazine will be a hybrid of indie and other genres (other genres dominated by indie). My target audience is 16+ year olds, mainly female.

Popular genres in UK top 40
The popular genres in the UK top 40 are R&B and pop such as Bruno Mars and Katy Perry although Adele has three singles in the top 40 showing that soul/indie is also popular. When you get into the 30/40's the genres become more individual such as Noah and the Whale. This shows that an indie magazine could do well if they welcome other hybrid genres.
